Three months ago, two good friends of mine got married in Durham.
Leonardo and Lucía did their PhD’s at Duke together. Now, he lives in Richmond, VA while she lives near Charlotte, NC. Both of them luckily got an academic job but a bit far away from each other (aprox. a five-hour drive.) The way they deal with distance is by visiting each other or spending a weekend in Durham (which is fortunately in the precise middle of the distance between Richmond and Charlotte) from time to time.
When they told me that they were getting married, they asked me to be their wedding photographer as well. Wedding photography is different from I would consider “my style.” I love saturated colors, strong contrast, as much natural light as possible… while wedding photography usually has soft colors and textures, a very low contrast, and special flashes are often used to soften shadows on people’s faces. It was a challenge for me! But well, I was so honored that I couldn’t say no.
Before the ceremony, we had a pre-wedding photo shoot. We wandered around Durham’s downtown to find significant locations for their relationship like the intersection of Main St., Morris St., and East Chapel Hill St.
At the beginning the couple was (reasonably) a bit nervous but as the session went on, they relaxed. We got some fun images! In downtown, there’s a statue of a bull, so Leonardo and Lucía said “Vaaaaaaaaaca” (cooooooow) aloud. Go figure why!…
It was a cold day, so Lucía and Leonardo were freezing. She had thankfully brought a raincoat but he hadn’t, so the bride literally became the groom’s shelter.
The wedding was full of sweet moments that I was able to capture with my camera. For example, Lucía adjusted Leonardo’s tie before the ceremony started.
And then, Leonardo spontaneously kissed Lucía’s hand before they exchanged vows.
Last weekend, we got together to watch the Germany-Argentina game at one of their favorite bars (Motorco) and had some ice cream at one of their favorite places (The Parlour) later as they stopped by Durham on their way to Charlotte. Although Argentina lost, we had lots of fun!…
From Durham, NC, I send merry 3-months-together best wishes to my friends, Leonardo & Lucía!…
PS. You thought I was not going to include a “The Kiss!” photo? Well, you were… wrong!…
