The Peruvian government recently promulgated a law reducing labor benefits to workers between 18 and 24 years old (yearly rewards, life insurance, 15 days of vacation instead of 30.) As a consequence, thousands of young people demonstrated in Lima’s downtown yesterday to request the annulation of a law that will only benefit employers (industries following it will get some tax-exemptions, for instance.) I attended the demonstration and took some photos.
Just like in the States some weeks ago, Peruvians are rising up to show their frustration and anger with social injustice. This was actually the third demonstration in 10 days. Labor unions and university groups are organizing another march for January 15th unless the government derogates the law before. We’ll see what our President and the Congress have to say…
